Daniel Sturridge returns to Liverpool training ahead of Merseyside derby

The Reds welcome Everton to Anfield in a lunchtime kickoff, as they look to do the double over their city rivals and continue their push for a top-four finish.

Having sealed a 1-0 win over Ronald Koeman’s side back in December, Liverpool will be hoping to build on this with another victory on home turf.

After a busy international break for the Reds, Klopp saw a host of key names return to Melwood on Thursday.

This included Sturridge, who has missed the last four games, initially due to illness and then a hip injury picked up as he underwent rehabilitation.

The striker has endured a troubled campaign, making just 21 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, including a meagre five starts in the Premier League, but his return is timely.

Sturridge has scored four goals in seven games against Everton since joining the Reds in 2013, and is still unbeaten in the Merseyside derby.

It is unlikely that the 27-year-old will start on Saturday, but his availability is a big boost.

Philippe Coutinho was also back in training on Thursday, after his heroics for Brazil in their 3-0 win over Paraguay in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The 24-year-old flew back to Liverpool on a private jet along with compatriot Roberto Firmino, who joined Coutinho to make his return to the training field.

Fellow internationals Emre Can, Sadio Mane, Georginio Wijnaldum, Marko Grujic, Joe Gomez, Divock Origi, Ragnar Klavan and Trent Alexander-Arnold also took part in a positive session.

Meanwhile, Loris Karius, Lucas Leiva, Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren, James Milner, Nathaniel Clyne, Alberto Moreno, Connor Randall, Kevin Stewart, Sheyi Ojo and Ben Woodburn all continued their preparations.

Not pictured, however, were Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana, with the England duo both doubts for Saturday.

Lallana has been ruled out for up to a month with a thigh injury, while Henderson has set his sights on a place in Klopp’s squad for the derby, as he recovers from a foot problem.

But if the captain did miss training once again, it seems unlikely he will be fit to start at Anfield.
