Exactly how Coutinho’s €40m add-ons

Liverpool sold Coutinho to Barcelona for a fee that could reach £142m, or €160m – which is how we’ll explain the fee during this piece for the sake of ease.

The Spanish have given us €120m up front for the brilliant Brazilian, who won’t make a debut for them this month after it turned out his thigh injury was genuine.

El Periodico state that the extra €40m will be made up as follows:

After 25 games, Liverpool will receive €5m
After 100 games, Liverpool will receive €20m
After Champions League Qualification, Liverpool will receive €10m (Max x 2)
If Barca win the Champions League, Liverpool will receive €5m

Essentially, Liverpool are guaranteed €35m in add-ons, with the only doubt whether Barca win the Champions League at some point during his tenure.

With Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Ousmane Dembele, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquest et al, we wouldn’t bet against it.

That’s a lot of money for Liverpool to play with. Hopefully we reinvest it wisely this time around.
