Joe Gomez, our prodigal teenage defender, should be back for Jurgen Klopp’s first pre-season in charge of Liverpool, according to the Echo.

The youngster has been out since the first week of Klopp’s reign, after he ruptured ligaments on international duty with England Under-21s back in October, but is progressing well and is ready to start full training.

Gomez hasn’t played since his injury, which is a crying shame considering the way he started his Liverpool career. Signed from Charlton to limited fanfare, Gomez took pre-season by storm and earned himself a spot in Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI at the beginning of last campaign.

Despite being used at left-back under the former boss, Gomez’s future lies in central defence – and it’ll be in this position we can expect to see him over the summer.

Stylistically, Gomez has all the traits a centre-back needs under Klopp. He can step out of defence and start attacks from deep because of his excellent technical ability and passing; he’s tall – so can deal with aerial threats; and possesses a composure at the back – which his team-mates in the same position perhaps do not.
