Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he hasn’t had many 5-1 victories as good as the Reds’ thrashing of Hull City at Anfield on Saturday.
Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and two penalties from James Milner beat a poor Hull side, who were reduced to 10 men in the first half after Ahmed Elmohamady handled on the goalline to receive a straight red card.
Klopp watched on from the sidelines as the Reds continued their excellent start to the season with 24 created chances and 32 shots in total as Hull were barely able to get out of their own half.
The German later admitted that it was one of the best 5-1 victories he’s had as a manager.
“I don’t know how many times in my life, and I’ve had four or five hundred games as a manager, that I’ve won 5-1 in this kind of [way],” Klopp told the club’s official website.
“It’s all good and I don’t want to criticise but I think we could have done better in the second half, honestly. It was good, even in the second half, but not as good as it could have been. I am really happy – really happy.
“I’m quite a thankful person usually, so I am really thankful for the first half! In the second half, a little bit better would have been nice. We have a lot of things to improve and one of the things is if you are brilliant, you need to be brilliant for 95 minutes.
“We were brilliant first half and second half we were still good, but not brilliant anymore. It’s all good and only my problem.”
Liverpool now sit fourth in the Premier League on 13 points having scored 16 goals. It is a far cry from the situation they found themselves in last season after just being beaten 3-1 by Manchester United.
Brendan Rodgers’ start this time last year was well below par and provided no optimism for the future, but Klopp has breathed fire and life into the club once again.
