Martin Keown: What really disappointed me

Martin Keown says Liverpool lack any class during their 1-0 loss to Southampton in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.

Liverpool were looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg at St Mary’s after Nathan Redmond scored the decisive goal on the south coast.

The Reds struggled to break down the Saints as Daniel Sturridge wasted a number of chances in the second half at the 18-time English champions.

Shane Long scored an added-time winner to seal Southampton’s 2-0 aggregate win against Liverpool to leave Jurgen Klopp facing an increasing crisis.

The Merseyside outfit have only managed to win one game in their opening seven fixtures in all competitions so far.

Speaking to The Daily Mail about Liverpool’s recent demise, Keown said:

“It’s easy to say that they have run out of energy but last night I didn’t think they had any confidence.

“I was really disappointed with Liverpool. There was a lack of class in their performance.

“Liverpool do everything frenetically at 100 miles per hour and sometimes I’m not sure they know what they are doing.”

Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table and 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

The Reds signed seven players in the summer transfer window as Klopp looked to build a squad capable of finishing in the top four.
