Origi’s best chance to secure Liverpool future is during the pre-season tour

Liverpool striker Divock Origi appears to still be in manager Jurgen Klopp’s plans despite failing to impress during his season-long loan at Wolfsburg last season, where he scored six times all-campaign.

However, the Belgian’s final chance to prove he deserves being the first-choice attacking backup is during the Reds’ pre-season tour this summer, and he must grab the opportunity with both hands, or he risks facing the music if doesn’t.

While the potential exits of Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings this summer should help boost Origi’s chances, Harry Wilson’s promotion and the possible arrival of another forward (Xherdan Shaqiri?) mean that might not be the case.

And he will have to show that he can deliver when afforded the chances in some of the nine pre-season games.

The high-profile friendlies with Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, Manchester City and Napoli could be his only shots at rescuing his Liverpool career.

Lazar Markovic had similar chances to convince Klopp in the last two pre-seasons, but he put in underwhelming performances that have no doubt put paid to his Liverpool career.

Last summer, the Serbian featured in the second half of the opening friendly against Tranmere, but he squandered a great chance in front of goal and hasn’t featured for the Reds since.

Competing with the trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane for playing minutes, coupled with missing the World Cup, is more than enough to frustrate Origi, but he has, what could be, one more chance to prove his mental strength, true worth and potential this summer.
