Steven Gerrard has paid tribute to former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger after he announced his retirement aged 31.
Agger spent eight years at Anfield, joining from Brondby for £6million in 2006 before returning to his boyhood club in 2014.
And upon hearing the news former Reds skipper Gerrard took to Instagram to pay tribute to his former teammate.
“What a player this man was calm, composed and quality on the ball. All the best with your future mate it was a pleasure to play in the same team as you.”
Agger took to Twitter to confirm the news on Thursday morning.
“It’s sad, but it is the right decision to stop. I’m proud of my career,” he posted on the social media site.
The left-footed centre-back made 232 appearances for the Reds, scoring 14 goals and winning the League Cup in 2012.
He was also part of the side that reached the 2007 Champions League final – during his debut season at Anfield – but who lost 2-1 to AC Milan in the final.
However, injuries, most notably a back problem, hindered his time on Merseyside and after returning to Brondby in 2014 – 12 months after rejecting a move to Barcelona – he made just 44 appearances for the Danish side.
He made his final career appearance in Brondby’s Superliga defeat to Sonderjyske on May 29, handed a standing ovation by supporters when substituted in the 91st minute.
Agger also made 75 appearances for his country, scoring 12 goals, featuring at both the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championships.
