Virgil van Dijk: What I really think of Joe Gomez

Virgil van Dijk has insisted that he has been enjoying playing alongside Joe Gomez in the Liverpool FC defence.

Gomez was switched to a central defensive role by Jurgen Klopp for Sunday’s thumping victory over West Ham United at Anfield in the absence of the injured Ragnar Klavan, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip.

The pair produced a solid display as they helped Klopp’s men to keep a clean sheet in their Premier League opener against the Hammers.

Gomez earned lots of praise for the solid performances he showed under Klopp last term and Van Dijk has just embarked on his first full season at Anfield following his switch from Southampton back in January.

And the Netherlands defender has insisted that he has no doubts about Gomez’s ability to play in various positions across the back for the Merseyside outfit.

Speaking in an interview with Liverpool FC’s website, Van Dijk said: “I was not really worried, to be fair.

“I’ve played a couple of games in pre-season with Joe at centre-back and I have a very good relationship with him, a very good understanding outside of the pitch as well.

“We need everyone in the squad.”

Liverpool FC are aiming to win the Premier League title this season after they ended up fourth and without a trophy last term.

The Reds are still aiming to lift their first piece of silverware since Klopp’s appointment at Anfield back in October 2015.
