Xavi tells Coutinho to ignore Barcelona

Philippe Coutinho is enjoying a fantastic season so far, helping Liverpool climb to the top of the Premier League table, but the ability of the 24-year-old has led to speculation he could be prized away by one of Europe’s bigger sides.

With Luis Suarez having being snapped-up by Barcelona two-years ago, fans have been fearful that Coutinho will follow and they will have been surprised by comments from a Barcelona legend, who urged the Brazilian to stay put at Anfield.

“Coutinho is a player I have always thought is special – but under Klopp he has gone up another level. On form there are not any better midfield players in Europe.”

“He has always shown quality but now he is consistently playing well and that is good news for Liverpool if they want to really challenge for the title. He is playing under one of the most intelligent coaches in Europe. Klopp has a lot of experience at developing world-class players, so it is a good club for him to be at.”

Many would have expected Xavi to urge Coutinho to join his former side but the World Cup winner, now playing in Qatar, clearly has the best in mind for the Brazilian- although he did admit he would improve the Catalan giants’ squad.

“There are not many players that can improve Barcelona, but if you are asking me if he is one of them, on this form, I think he is. Technically he is very good. He would suit Barcelona’s philosophy well.”

Coutinho will be looking to continue his fine form this weekend when the Premier League returns, with Liverpool tackling Southampton.
