Firmino key to Fabinho deal

Liverpool will pay Monaco 45million euros, plus a potential further 5million euros in add-ons, for a player who is expected to occupy a holding role in the middle of the park. Fabinho, capped four times by his country but omitted from their World Cup squad, had no hesitation in signing a “long-term contract” with the Champions League finalists, and says fellow Brazilian Firmino helped him decide that Anfield is the place to be.

“We spoke a bit more about how the city was, about the infrastructure of the club, the city and we also spoke about the coaches and how they do their work,” Fabinho told the club’s website.

“So I was able to know a bit more about Liverpool through Firmino. I had been with him at the Brazilian national team on a few occasions.

“I know he’s a fantastic person, his background is from nice people. He is also very good for someone who comes to a new country, a new city – someone who speaks the same language. This will of course make the adaptation much easier.” Meanwhile, reports have claimed Arsenal made more than one attempt to hijack the move over the weekend, but deal was already in place and no-one was willing to pull the plug.
