Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was infuriated at full-time on Saturday, because he felt Watford’s Miguel Britos was offside when he netted the equalising goal and former referee Dermot Gallagher agrees with him.
Britos headed the ball over the line from just one-yard out in stoppage-time to hand Watford a point after Richarlison had seen an effort deflect onto the bar and off Mignolet.
Footage seems to indicate that Britos is marginally in front of Richarlison when he plays the ball and should have been flagged offside and the goal disallowed, although it is an incredibly tight call.
Speaking on Sky Sports News’ ref watch feature, Gallagher said the linesman had got the decision wrong.
“It’s amazing. Watching the game you thought it was clearly offside and expected the goal to be disallowed,” Gallagher said.
“When you see it from side on this is a tough, tough call. It is offside but it isn’t as clear-cut as everyone made out at the start.
“I think because of how it went across and Mignolet playing the ball across, the assistant had a tough call to make and, unfortunately, called it wrong.”
Liverpool’s second was from the penalty spot after Heurelho Gomes had brought down Mohamed Salah in the box.
There were few complaints at the time from Gomes and Watford’s players and Gallagher praised the decision.
“I think the shot clearly shows it was a foul,” Gallager added.
“Where the referee [Anthony Taylor] was it was a good spot, but he may well have had an input from his assistant looking across and advising him.
“If he did then it was great team-talk. But it is the right decision between them.”
