Gerrard is a player “you cannot replace”

Gerrard, who will leave in the Summer to join LA Galaxy, had earlier missed a penalty to put the Reds 2-1 ahead and it looked like that would be something to rue.

But the captain showed the way by heading home in the eighty-seventh minute to seal the win for Liverpool – and the goal took him ahead of Robbie Fowler into fifth place in the all-time scoring list for the club.

And Rodgers was quick to praise Gerrard after his match-winning salvo.

“A lot of players when they miss a big penalty their game goes and their confidence goes. He is the total opposite. He is one of a unique group of players that when they need to respond, they do.” he said.

“You can see he is still contributing at this level. There were people behind me shouting to get him off. I knew if you keep him on, you have every chance of getting a goal. This is a guy that you cannot replace. He is an incredible talent.

“It will probably only be when he is gone that people will recognise what a talent he is.” he concluded.
