‘I told Klopp to sign this player’

Jurgen Klopp’s best friend David Wagner is currently doing an exceptional job at Huddersfield in the Championship, giving the minnows an excellent chance of promotion to the top flight for the first time since 1972.

Today, his side takes on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City for a place in the FA Cup quarterfinals and has taken time to discuss their frighteningly promising young winger Leroy Sane.

The German started slowly following his move from Schalke to the Premier League, but is now a first-choice starter in Pep’s scintillating front-three.

According to Wagner, he advised Klopp to sign him for Borussia Dortmund during their time at our manager’s former club, but Sane ended up at rivals Schalke instead.

“I knew him early,” Wagner told Manchester Evening News.

“He was more of a character because of his age and it was part of my job to mention the big talents of Germany to Jurgen.

“I made him aware of him for the first team of Dortmund, but he signed for Schalke.”

City had to pay huge cash for Sane last summer, while we spent our ‘winger fund’ on Sadio Mane – so it’s not like we missed out. We do need another pacy wide-man of this ilk though, so will be targeting one when the window opens at the end of this campaign.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Julian Brandt is the favourite, according to the Echo, with Klopp earmarking the 20-year-old starlet as a future world-beater.
