Klopp Ready To Give Danny Ward A Chance

Forgotten during the Great Battle of the Keepers in 2017-2018 between Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet, was Liverpool’s third choice, the Welshman Danny Ward. With the current tumult happening in that position, and with no new signings likely to appear, the ECHO is reporting that Klopp is prepared to give Ward a chance to fight for the number one spot during the pre-season.

Ward has impressed the boss in his first two games against Tranmere Rovers and Chester City last week, as well as during traininig at Melwood. With Karius showing signs of not fully recovering his confidence after the debacle of the Champions League final, and with Simon Mignolet missing the pre-season while in Russia with Belgium — a likely gone this summer anyway — there’s never been a better chance for Ward to step up.

This news may be disappointing for Liverpool fans who were hoping to get a well-established, quality goalkeeper in this window to challenge Karius for the number one position. Danny Ward found himself frozen out of the team last season, while the competition between Karius and Mignolet raged on, so it is frustrating that he might be Liverpool’s best option at the moment.

But pre-season is the time when every player tries to prove himself to the manager, and if Ward continues to put in strong performances — especially if Karius falters — then he will have earned his place.
