Liverpool will need Daniel Sturridge in race for the top four…

Liverpool legend Ian Rush has admitted that he was delighted to see Daniel Sturridge stay at the club during the January transfer window.Sturridge has been at Liverpool for just over four years now but is currently third choice under Jurgen Klopp due to struggling to adapt to his system.

The English forward has scored just two goals in the Premier League and has six in all competitions, but finds himself behind Roberto Firmino, who has nine goals, and Divock Origi, who’s also scored nine times.

There were reports linking Sturridge with a move to West Ham and Arsenal last month but Liverpool kept hold of him, which has delighted the club’s record scorer, Rush.

“Daniel Sturridge is probably the most gifted striker we have got,” Rush said to the Daily Mail.

“I was made up that he didn’t go in January and I hope he is still here next year but you have got to fight for your place. I think he will fight for his place. One thing for certain this year is that we will need Daniel Sturridge and once he gets that chance he has to take it.

“And when he does take it and starts scoring again I think he’ll play a major part in Liverpool making the top four.”
