Liverpool’s defending was a mixed bag in Swansea defeat

Jordan Henderson believes that Liverpool could’ve defended “a lot better” on Saturday, as they suffered a shock 3-2 defeat against Swansea City at Anfield.

After making a stunning start this season under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool have endured a tough few weeks in the Premier League, picking up just two points from their previous two fixtures prior to Saturday’s clash with the struggling Swans. However despite being clear favourites at Anfield, they were beaten in dramatic fashion.

A Fernando Llorente brace gave Swansea a 2-0 lead early in the second half, before Roberto Firmino dragged the Reds back into it with two goals of his own. As the balance of power appeared to shift, Gylfi Sigurdsson then stunned Merseyside with the eventual winner in the final 15 minutes.

Subsequently Liverpool’s title-challenge took a big hit, with captain Henderson admitting that their defensive work was a mixed bag on the day.

“We still feel very confident as a team, we’ve got brilliant players and we just need to keep going the way we have,” the 26-year-old told BT Sport (via the club’s official website). “I felt, as a team, at times we did [defend well] but at times we can defend a lot better.

“We need to make sure, especially when you get back in the game at 2-2, that first and foremost you defend and, with the quality we’ve got, you always fancy us to get another goal.”
