Christian Benteke

Story of his season: The Aston Villa striker scored 16 goals in all competitions – including the equaliser against Liverpoolin the FA cup semi-final at Wembley in April, to spark talk of the Belgian’s departure from Vill Park. After being linked with a move to Merseyside, went missing in Villa’s FA cip final defeat to Arsenal.

Why Liverpool need him: Following a season that saw first-choice striker Daniel Sturridge spend more time on the treatment table than pitch, Liverpool are in dire need of a proven goalscorer.

Chris Bascombe’s verdict: Belgian striker has £32.5 million exit clause, and Champions League clubs will also be monitoring position at Aston Villa.

Nathaniel Clyne

Story of his season: The 24-year-old has been one of the players of the season for Southampton leading to the full-back earning his first full England caps.

Why Liverpool need him: Brendan Rodgers needs a permanent full-back to fill the void after Glen Johnson left Anfield on a free transfer. The versatile Emre Can was tested out in the position towards the end of the season, but with poor results. Would fit Rodgers’ preferred style of play.

Chris Bascombe’s verdict: Liverpool have made initial £10 million bid and will continue to pursue the right-back.

Danny Ings

Story of his season: Scored 11 goals as Burnley were relegated to the Championship before he was courted by Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Sociedad and, of course, Liverpool. Due to join up with the England squad for the Under-21 European Championships later this month.

Why Liverpool need him: He may not be in the bracket of Luis Suárez or a (fit) Sturridge, but Liverpool’s lack of goals last season cost them dearly and anything the 22-year-old Englishman can offer will be welcomed by Liverpool fans.

Chris Bascombe’s verdict: Expected to be unveiled on July 1 once Burnley contract expires. Under-21 international will vastly improve attacking options.

James Milner

Story of his season: Despite making 32 league appearances, the 29-year-old has been left frustrated by Manchester City’s rotation policy. Wants assurances of regular first-team football, so much so that he is prepared to take pay cut after turning down 165000 pounds per week offer to stay at the Etihad.

Why Liverpool need him: Milner is understood to be attracted by the idea of playing in central midfield – a position now available after Steven Gerrard’s departure. The versatile midfielder, too, can fit into whatever formation Rodgers settles on.

Chris Bascombe’s verdict: Free transfer from Manchester City and attracted by promise of regular starts.

Adam Bogdan

Story of his season: Made just 13 appearances for Bolton this season, but impressed as the Championship side held Liverpool to a goalless draw in their FA cup 4th round meeting at Anfield in January.

Why Liverpool need him: Following the departure of Brad Jones, Liverpool will be keen to bring in a proven No 2 to first-choice goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

Chris Bascombe’s verdict: Goalkeeper is out of contract at Bolton and identified as possible back-up to Mignolet.
