The curious Liverpool career of Javier Manquillo is over after the right-back’s unusual two-year loan from Atlético Madrid was cancelled early by mutual consent.

The Spanish side issued a statement on Wednesday, citing a lack of playing time for the decision, which read: “Javier Manquillo will not fulfil his second season on loan with Liverpool.

“The player and Atlético Madrid decided that he would go to Anfield for two seasons to enjoy the necessary minutes to continue growing football-wise.

“However, in this first season with the ‘Reds’, the defender has not had all the minutes he and our club consider necessary for that purpose of accumulating experience.”

During his solitary season on Merseyside, Manquillo made 19 appearances in total but only three of those have come since the turn of the year and all in cup competitions.

Despite the recent departure of Glen Johnson, future opportunities at Anfield for the 21-year-old looked even more limited following the arrivals of Nathaniel Clyne and Joe Gomez.

England U21 defender Andre Wisdom also provides further strength in depth after returning from a loan spell with West Bromwich Albion.

Manquillo is not expected to stay at the Vicente Calderon for long though with a number of other clubs from around Europe said to be interested in taking over from Liverpool as a temporary home for the Spanish youth international.
