Premier League giants Liverpool tonight set a new club record during their hammering of Maribor in the Champions League.
Jurgen Klopp’s men travelled Slovenia to take on minnows Maribor in the third Group E fixture of their European campaign.
Despite being considered favourites heading into the group, the Reds had managed just two points from their opening two matches, draws versus Sevilla and Spartak Moscow.
Maribor, meanwhile, sat bottom of the table, a point behind Liverpool and Spartak.
However, despite their recent struggles in front of goal coming into the clash, Liverpool did not take long to put themselves out of sight this evening, with 3 goals in the opening 20 minutes putting the game firmly to bed.
The Reds’ fearsome attacking trio of Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Mohamed Salah were all on target, before yet another strike from summer signing Salah five minutes before half-time put an early gloss on the scoreline.
However, it was only when Roberto Firmino notched his brace that Jurgen Klopp’s Reds became the owners of a new club record.
In racking up 5 goals, this became the first Liverpool side in history to score as many goals away from home in the Champions League.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain went on to notch his first for the club after 86 minutes, before a 90th minute strike from Trent Alexander-Arnold extended Liverpool’s new record even further.
With Sevilla having fallen to a surprise defeat in Moscow tonight, Liverpool now sit joint top of Group E with 5 points.
