“[The Gerrard comparison] definitely makes me feel proud,” he told Sport-Informations-Dienst.

“But with all due respect to Steven Gerrard: I’m Emre Can and want to go my own way.”

Can still has a long way to go if he is to reach the status the former Reds captain had at the club. Gerrard won the 2005 Champions League with Liverpool and is widely regarded as one of the most iconic players in the history of the club.

The Germany international of Turkish origin joined the Reds in the summer of 2013 from Bayer Leverkusen and had the honour of playing in the same time as Gerrard.

Can has since established himself as a first team regular in the Liverpool midfield and there have been calls for him to become the next captain of the club.

Jordan Henderson is currently captain but there have been rumours that he is headed for a summer exit which could leave Can in pole position to take his armband.

The 22-year-old is currently out injured after picking up an ankle injury following the 4-3 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League quarter-final second leg tie at Anfield.
