Mateo Kovacic is free to leave Real Madrid and he revealed he is leaving the Bernabeu this summer in a bid to find regular game time and Michael Mongie believes he’d be fantastic for Liverpool.
Liverpool have already signed Naby Keïta and Fabinho this summer, with Xherdan Shaqiri set to follow them through the door after the Swiss were knocked out of the World Cup by Sweden.
Meanwhile, France are still in the competition and their progress to the final has delayed any resumption in negotiations for Nabil Fekir. That said, French journalist Löic Tanzi has claimed that talks will soon resume as the playmaker as he has his eyes set on a “dream move” to Anfield.
One midfielder who has been linked with Liverpool in the past is Mateo Kovacic and the Croatian has recently stated his desire to complete a move away from Real Madrid due to his lack of playing time with Los Blancos.
Much like Luka Modric, Kovacic has a little bit of everything and while he’s not an out and out defensive midfielder, he is more than capable of playing as a deep-lying playmaker or further forward as a no.8 or an attacking midfielder.
Speaking to Spanish news outlet, Kovacic said late last month: “I would like to play more at Real Madrid because I love football and I love being on the pitch.
“I know that it’s difficult to be a starter at Real Madrid, especially when I arrived at a really young age.
“I understand the situation, but because of that I believe the best thing for me would be to go to another club where I’d have the opportunity to play regularly as a starter.
“I think I can have this opportunity and it’s one I want right now.”
While I have no idea how Jürgen Klopp would set up with Fabinho, Keïta, Nabil Fekir and Kovacic, the mere thought of having the Croatian threading silky passes across Anfield every week is too much to handle.
He’ll undoubtedly want regular playing time which might be difficult to guarantee now given the pedigree of players in the Reds’ engine but if a deal is possible, then getting Kovacic is a must.
With just three years remaining on his contract at the Bernabeu, he wouldn’t cost as much as he would’ve last summer.
Last month, a report from Fichajes.net claimed that Real Madrid had offered the Croat to Liverpool due to the fact that he is fifth choice in the middle of the park behind Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Casemiro and Isco.
With his composure on the ball, eye for a pass and ability to beat a man, he’d certainly be as a good an option to be Philippe Coutinho’s replacement as Nabil Fekir. While he might not be as good at set pieces, he is far superior at dictating play.
He would likely prove to be cheaper as well given his lack of recent playing time and if the Anfield hierarchy fancied a move for him, there would be a lot less resistance from Madrid than there is from Lyon.
