Jamie Redknapp believes Roberto Firmino’s superior work rate is earning the Liverpool forward a place in Jurgen Klopp’s starting line-up ahead of Daniel Sturridge.

The England striker has struggled to secure a regular spot in Klopp’s side in the 2016-17 season so far, with the 27-year-old starting four of Liverpool’s nine Premier League games.

Klopp dropped Sturridge to the bench for the visit of West Brom on Saturday evening after the former Chelsea and Manchester City man struggled to have an impact in a goalless draw with Manchester United earlier this month.

Liverpool eased to a 2-1 victory over the Baggies as Firmino teed up Senegal international Sadio Mane for the home side’s opening goal on Merseyside.

Former Reds captain Redknapp explained why he believes Firmino remains in favour with Klopp ahead of Sturridge

“Jurgen Klopp appears to prefer Roberto Firmino,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

“He seems to give them a bit more rotation up top. Klopp probably thinks Sturridge doesn’t put in enough of a shift when they haven’t got the ball. That’s what Firmino does well.”

Liverpool are in third place in the Premier League table after their 2-1 win against the Baggies at Anfield on Saturday evening.
